Job Title: Backend Python Developer
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid – 3 days/week onsite at client location)
Employment Type: expected 2 months to start (with option to renew for another 6)

Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Principal Architect/Engineer with deep expertise in backend engineering and cloud-native architectures to lead the design and evolution of our next-generation payments platform.

This role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic architecture ownership. You will drive proof-of-concepts, define architectural standards, and present solution designs to senior leadership. Python is the primary language for this environment, with Java as a secondary stack.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Lead the architecture and design of scalable, secure, cloud-native payment systems

  • Define and evolve architectural principles, patterns, and standards for distributed systems

  • Assist with proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and evaluate emerging technologies in payments, data, and ML

  • Conduct architecture reviews, performance assessments, and threat modeling exercises

Payments Domain Ownership

  • Own key technical decisions across payment orchestration, fraud detection/handling, and gateway integrations

  • Design integrations with external financial networks (e.g., SWIFT) and third-party providers

  • Ensure systems are resilient, high-performing, and compliant with regulatory standards

Cloud & Platform Engineering

  • Architect solutions in AWS or Azure using modern microservices and event-driven patterns

  • Guide backend development using Python (primary) and Java (secondary)

  • Drive data and machine learning integrations where applicable

Executive Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear architectural artifacts and executive-ready PowerPoint presentations

  • Present architectural strategies, trade-offs, and roadmaps to senior leadership

  • Collaborate with Product, Compliance, Security, and Infrastructure teams to align technical and business priorities

Required Experience & Skills

  • 10+ years in software engineering with significant experience in architecture roles

  • Strong backend expertise in Python (primary) and Java (secondary)

  • Proven experience designing distributed systems in AWS or Azure

  • Deep understanding of payments systems, including orchestration and gateway integrations

  • Experience building or supporting data-driven or ML-enabled systems

  • Strong executive communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to lead PoCs and drive architecture from concept to production

Regulatory & Industry Knowledge

Experience working within regulated financial environments and familiarity with standards such as:

  • PCI-DSS

  • PSD2

  • Real-Time Payments (RTP)

  • ISO 20022

  • Confident presenting to executives and influencing senior stakeholders

  • Experienced in balancing innovation, compliance, and operational resilience

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$60.00 and CA$70.00
