What You Will Do:
Reporting to the AVP, Commodity Tax, the Director, Commodity Tax will take on the leadership and oversight of the indirect tax function for CTC and its subsidiaries, including the identification of risks and opportunities and monitoring the impact of the global trend towards digitization of commodity tax.
The incumbent would serve as the primary subject matter expert on sales taxes for Enterprise projects and initiatives etc. This role will interact with various business groups providing an opportunity to understand business processes and approach and to advise on how best to structure business transactions, processes, and systems.
Other Responsibilities include:
- Staying current on commodity tax legislation, rulings, interpretations, court cases and other changes as they relate to the retail, real estate, and financial institution industries; analyzing the implications and communicating such to the organization as appropriate.
- Designing/Improving processes to achieve operational efficiency and data accuracy with respect to the accounting & analysis of commodity taxes.
- Working with the AVP, Commodity Tax, to determine federal and provincial commodity tax implications of unusual, complex transactions and initiatives with a view to minimizing tax cost to the CTC group and its customers while maintaining an appropriate level of risk.
- Oversight of procedural documentation for all systems and processes related to the collection, recovery, and remittance of sales tax
- Managing federal and provincial commodity tax audits, taking the lead on the negotiation, objection, and settlement of audit disputes.
- Train, mentor, and develop other team associates to encourage cross training, succession, and compelling career paths.
- Developing relationships within the Enterprise to continue to raise awareness to commodity tax matters and the Commodity Tax Team’s expertise and support, including promotion through regular training presentations and check-in meetings.
- Effectively communicating and interacting with various outside stakeholders including the company’s Associate Dealers, vendors, customers (through customer relations) and government officials.
- Representing CTC in commodity tax-related meetings with external associations such as the Commodity Tax Industry Group, Retail Council of Canada, and Canadian Bankers Association.
- Participating in special projects that impact sales tax compliance processes and tax planning opportunities, as required.
- Preparing and presenting material to senior management as required.
Qualifications:
- Professional Accounting Designation and/or completion of In-depth GST/HST program
- Excellent interpersonal skills to build a network of contacts within and outside of the Canadian Tire Enterprise
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with researching complex tax questions and issues
- Proven ability to solve problems, propose alternatives to resolve issues and identify process improvement opportunities
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities
- Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and maintain exceptional attention to detail
- 7+ years work experience in commodity tax, ideally for financial institutions as well as the retail industry
- Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced, and agile business environment
- Exposure and experience with automation tools considered an asset

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$130,000 and CA$145,000
