IT Project Controller (Junior)

Location: Charleston, WV
Schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week)
Work Type: Office-based (no field work required)
Estimated Duration: 12 Months


Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Junior IT Project Controller to support capital and technology-related projects within a Project Controls environment. This role is responsible for providing cost control, forecasting, financial reporting, and budget monitoring support to Project Managers and cross-functional teams.

The ideal candidate has foundational experience in project cost control, strong ERP system knowledge (SAP preferred), and the ability to analyze financial data in support of project decision-making.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide project cost control support for IT and capital-related initiatives
  • Maintain work orders and project data within SAP/PowerPlan
  • Support project initiation activities within financial systems
  • Process purchase requisitions and perform invoice verification/attestation
  • Conduct accounting transfers to ensure accurate cost allocation
  • Track project commitments, actuals, and forecasted costs
  • Monitor contingency, management reserve, and approved budget changes
  • Analyze and report financial KPIs to project teams
  • Coordinate with Project Managers to align cost tracking with project schedules
  • Participate in risk assessments and ensure risk impacts are reflected in forecasts
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in financial or forecast data
  • Support bidding and contract administration processes from a financial reporting perspective
  • Perform final cost reconciliation at project closeout
  • Maintain accurate documentation and version control
  • Identify opportunities to improve forecasting and cost control methodologies

Required Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education required; degree in Accounting, Business, Engineering, IT, or Project Management preferred
  • 1–4 years of experience in project cost control, financial analysis, or project accounting
  • Experience supporting capital or technology-related projects
  • Working knowledge of SAP (or similar ERP system)
  • Strong Excel skills (budget tracking, reporting, data analysis)
  • Understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and cost control principles
  • Ability to analyze cost data and communicate findings to project stakeholders
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PowerPlan
  • Exposure to Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • Understanding of Work Breakdown Structures (WBS)
  • Experience with change management and contingency tracking
  • Experience in utilities, infrastructure, or large enterprise IT environments
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling)

The pay range that the employer in good faith reasonably expects to pay for this position is between $30.00 and $34.00
