Job Title: Director of AI Risk
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid)

Reporting into the Vice President, Technology Governance and Security, the Director, Artificial Intelligence Risk plays a critical role in shaping and operationalizing the organization’s approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) risk management and governance. This role is responsible for ensuring AI solutions are designed, developed, and deployed safely, in compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies. The AI Risk Manager partners with stakeholders across the business to assess and mitigate AI-related risks, provides expert guidance on evolving regulatory expectations, and helps foster a culture of responsible AI innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to establish and maintain a technology risk management and governance framework focused on AI, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements (e.g., OSFI E-23, NIST) and supporting operationalization of AI governance processes.
Partner with Risk, Compliance, Legal, Enterprise Security, Technology, and other functions to support the safe design, development, deployment, and ongoing use of AI solutions in line with organizational risk appetite and compliance posture.
Serve as the subject matter expert on AI-specific risk, advising on enhancements to AI risk controls and governance standards as regulatory and industry expectations evolve.
Act as the Enterprise Risk Management representative on the AI Review Board (AIRB), applying the AI governance framework to assess use cases, conduct risk assessments, and make recommendations regarding approval, escalation, or mitigation.
Provide independent oversight and effective challenge of AI-related risk management activities to ensure initiatives remain within approved risk appetite, policy requirements, and regulatory expectations.
Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of AI governance processes and controls, collaborating with stakeholders to strengthen and enhance the organization’s AI governance capabilities.
Develop and maintain integrated reporting, metrics, and dashboards to provide leadership with visibility into AI risk exposure, control effectiveness, policy adherence, threshold breaches, and remediation status.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with auditors, regulators, compliance stakeholders, and business units to ensure timely and consistent handling of AI risk, audit, and compliance matters.
Support the Third-party Governance program and vendor risk assessments for AI-enabled providers, ensuring adherence to information security, privacy, data, and control requirements.
Educate and train business units on the AI risk management framework, policies, and standards, promoting a culture of risk awareness, compliance, and responsible experimentation.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Information Security, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
10+ years of experience in risk management, technology risk, compliance, or a related discipline; experience with AI, machine learning, or advanced analytics is an asset.
Professional certifications such as CRISC, CISM, CISSP, or similar are considered an asset.
Specific Knowledge & Skills (not preferred or an asset)
Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, guidelines and industry standards related to AI (e.g., OSFI E-23, NIST, ISO 42001, privacy laws).
Experience designing or implementing risk management frameworks, governance processes, and controls—preferably in a financial services or technology environment.
Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multiple functions and levels of the organization.
Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Experience with third-party risk management and vendor oversight is an asset.
Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and translate them into practical policies and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to educate, influence, and promote a culture of risk awareness and responsible AI innovation.
The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$95.00 and CA$115.00
