Electrical Design Engineer (OPG DE Qualified)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Intermediate Electrical Design Engineer to support multidisciplinary nuclear engineering projects within regulated nuclear facilities. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, modification, assessment, and execution of electrical engineering design packages in accordance with nuclear industry quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.

This role requires demonstrated experience working within the Ontario nuclear industry and possession of an active or previously held OPG Design Engineer (DE) qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review electrical engineering design packages, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports for nuclear facility modifications and refurbishment projects.
  • Support the design, assessment, maintenance, upgrade, and troubleshooting of electrical power systems, instrumentation and control (I&C) systems, motors, MCCs, transformers, switchgear, cable systems, and related plant equipment.
  • Perform engineering evaluations related to power distribution, electrical protection, equipment sizing, grounding, cable routing, and system coordination studies.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project managers, construction staff, operations, maintenance personnel, and field engineers to support project execution.
  • Ensure all engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, station procedures, and nuclear quality assurance requirements.
  • Participate in design change processes, technical reviews, walkdowns, constructability reviews, and field support activities.
  • Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and startup activities.
  • Develop engineering change documentation, procurement specifications, and technical recommendations for electrical systems and equipment.
  • Support resolution of condition reports, technical queries, and operational issues related to electrical systems and plant equipment.
  • Maintain strong adherence to nuclear safety culture principles and human performance tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario or eligibility to obtain.
  • Active or previously held OPG Design Engineer (DE) qualification is required.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of relevant engineering experience within the nuclear industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with nuclear plant electrical systems including power distribution, protection and control systems, MCCs, transformers, switchgear, and cable systems.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards including CSA, IEEE, NEC/CEC, and nuclear quality requirements.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations, electrical studies, and modification packages.
  • Familiarity with nuclear plant configuration management and design change control processes.
  • Ability to perform field walkdowns in operating industrial environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain nuclear security clearance.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting refurbishment, maintenance, or life extension projects in nuclear generating facilities.
  • Knowledge of electrical system studies including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, grounding, and protective coordination analyses.
  • Familiarity with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar electrical analysis software.
  • Experience supporting procurement, vendor technical reviews, equipment qualification, and commissioning activities.
  • Previous experience working in a unionized and highly regulated environment.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$60.00 and CA$90.00
