Job Title: Full Stack Engineer

Location: Toronto, ON (Remote)

Estimated Duration: 12 months

We are seeking a skilled Senior Back-End Java Developer (Contractor) to join the Platform and Development Xceleration Group and support the refactoring of the Interview Service application into a more modular, scalable, and customizable architecture.
This pivotal service orchestrates navigation flows and powers the user experience, making it critical to the product’s success. You will collaborate with Staff Engineers, architects, and other team members to drive technical improvements, ensuring the service meets high performance standards of >99.999% availability, multi-region disaster recovery, and handling >15,000 transactions per second (TPS). This role focuses on designing and developing solutions to support this transformation, leveraging your strong expertise in Java and backend engineering to build a resilient, extensible, and efficient platform.
The position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to refactoring a core our SaaS users.

Key Responsibilities:
Refactoring for Modular Architecture: –
Design and implement modular components for the Interview Service, enabling seamless deployment of independent, reusable service instances across various use cases. – Build configurable and extensible modules supporting dynamic workflows, decision trees, and custom business logic across different consumer personas. Scalability &

Performance Optimization: – Refactor and optimize backend system components while continuing to support >15,000 TPS under high-load conditions. – Develop high-performance APIs and data-handling capabilities that ensure sub-millisecond latency for critical navigation and workflow operations.

Resiliency & Disaster Recovery:
Maintain the service’s resiliency through failover mechanisms, redundancy, multi-region deployments, and disaster recovery (DR) strategies. Implement zero-downtime upgrades, leveraging CI/CD pipelines and robust deployment automation processes.

Quality & Observability: – Build automated unit, integration, and load testing frameworks to ensure system reliability and adherence to performance SLAs (>99.999% availability). – Embed observability into the application using advanced monitoring and logging solutions like Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.

Collaboration: – Partner closely with Staff Engineers, architects, and product managers to define the technical roadmap for refactoring this critical service.

Skills:

8+ years of professional experience in backend development using Java and related frameworks (e.g., Spring Framework, Hibernate).
Experience designing modular systems with configurable workflows and reusable components.
Expertise in building scalable systems capable of handling high TPS workloads, including optimization techniques for performance and resilience.
Proficiency in containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and deployment pipelines (Jenkins, Gitlab CI/CD).
Familiarity with cloud services ecosystems (AWS preferred), including advanced scaling and routing tools.
Hands-on experience with automated testing frameworks for backend systems
Practical knowledge of observability tools like Prometheus, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, or Splunk to support monitoring, logging, and alerting.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$60.00 and CA$75.00
