Position Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager or designate, the General Superintendent oversees and manages all phases of railway track construction and maintenance projects, including safety, scheduling, coordinating workers, materials and equipment, supervising subcontractors, ensuring specifications are followed, and that work is completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Provides leadership and oversight to all construction efforts to ensure that projects are executed in accordance with the design, budget, and schedule.

• Ensures adequate resources are in place, including labour, equipment, and materials, to meet schedule, quality, and budget requirements.

• Performs an in-depth review of drawings, designs, and contract documentation to become familiar with all details, notes, and requirements.

• Supervises overall construction and maintenance efforts in the field to ensure work is completed in accordance with design, specifications, budget, and schedule.

• Monitors quality standards of all work, including subcontractor performance.

• Is responsible for worker productivity and the efficient use of materials and equipment.

• Reports production quantities to the office and reviews labour productivity reports on a weekly basis.

• Understands contracts and scope of work, and works with the Project Management Team to identify and manage potential change orders.

• Monitors and adheres to established budgets for the job.

• Investigates alternative work methods and materials to improve efficiency and/or quality of work performed.

• Monitors job schedules and coordinates subcontractor work, supplier deliveries, and equipment needs, taking appropriate action as necessary.

• Ensures all field personnel comply with company policies, project procedures, safety programs, and work rules, taking corrective action as necessary.

• The General Superintendent will work both on-site and in the office.

• Performs other duties as required.

General/Other Responsibilities

• Reviews and approves timesheets for accuracy, job coding, equipment, materials, and related items.

• Participates in invoicing, identifies and administers extras to be invoiced, and assists with outstanding accounts receivable when required.

• Establishes and maintains effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

• Acts as a liaison among owners, inspectors, staff, and subcontractors.

• Assists with the preparation of written reports and updates for management, the client, and the project team to ensure a clear understanding of project status.

• Supports business development efforts and is willing to engage with new clients to help grow the business.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Minimum of 10 years of recent related construction experience, including a thorough knowledge of construction industry practices, methods, and processes. Prior railway experience is preferred but not required.

• Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of basic project controls, material management, contract management, and subcontract management.

• Proven track record of successfully executing projects on schedule and within budget.

• Valid and clean driver’s license.

• High school graduation plus post-secondary training in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Travel to job sites is required.

• Exposure to outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions.

• Work is performed in and around live track environments.

• Work may take place in urban, rural, or isolated areas.
