Job Title: Lead Power BI /Power BI
Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid)
Estimated Duration: 6 Months
Looking to hire a Lead Power BI Developer and a Power BI Developer. Both roles support the business-facing reporting layer between Microsoft Fabric data products and operational and leadership users. Each role is 6 months contract to start, with chance to extend for more term. Both roles require strong Power BI and Microsoft Fabric experience. Both must also be comfortable picking up ad-hoc requests and turning them around quickly without compromising accuracy.
Position Details
Lead Power BI Developer; Power BI Developer
Function: Advanced Analytics
Reports to: Manager, Advanced Analytics
Platform :Microsoft Fabric on Azure (Power BI, OneLake, Lakehouse/Warehouse, Direct Lake)
Strong Power BI and Fabric experience; comfortable with ad-hoc requests
Lead Power BI Developer
The Lead Power BI Developer owns the quality and consistency of the team's Power BI and semantic-model layer. This is a hands-on lead role: the person still builds, but is also accountable for standards, reusable models, metric definitions, validation practices, and guiding the Power BI developer(s). Strong Power BI and Fabric experience is essential.
What You Will Own
Semantic model standard. Own shared, well-structured semantic models and reusable, documented measures across reports.
Maintain agreed definitions so the same number means the same thing everywhere. Validation & reconciliation: Set the standard for reconciling Power BI outputs back to Fabric and source data.
Fabric integration : Consume governed Lakehouse/Warehouse data and advise on what logic belongs upstream versus in BI.
Team guidance: Review work, set patterns, and reduce dependency on any single developer.
Ad-hoc delivery: Triage and turn around ad-hoc requests quickly while protecting accuracy and reuse.
Key Responsibilities
Own semantic-model and DAX quality, and keep measures centralized, documented, and reusable.
Define and maintain metric definitions and data contracts with stakeholders.
Set and enforce validation and reconciliation practices against Fabric and source data.
Partner with data engineering, data scientists, and operations to make outputs decision ready.
Guide and review the Power BI developer(s) and make BI assets supportable, not person dependent.
Handle ad-hoc and exploratory requests, label confidence levels, and prevent prototypes becoming hidden production logic.
Support user acceptance testing (UAT) and business validation with clear evidence.
Required Experience
Five or more years in business intelligence / reporting, with four or more years in Power BI.
Strong Power BI semantic models, DAX, and report development.
Practical Microsoft Fabric experience (OneLake, Lakehouse/Warehouse, Direct Lake, refresh).
Strong SQL — able to reconcile report numbers to source independently.
Strong dimensional and data modelling and grain management.
Evidence of owning shared models used by multiple stakeholders and setting standards for others.
Comfortable owning a queue of ad-hoc requests and prioritizing without losing accuracy.
Preferred Experience
Fabric semantic models and Direct Lake at scale; deployment pipelines and workspace governance.
Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, Performance Analyzer, or similar tooling.
Operational, capacity-planning, aviation, logistics, or workforce/resource analytics.
Partnering with data scientists on forecast or model outputs.
Git-based or Power BI Project (PBIP) lifecycle management; row-level security and sensitivity labels.
Power BI Developer
The Power BI Developer builds and maintains trusted reports and supporting models for airport operations under the lead's standards. This person is detail-oriented, comfortable taking clear direction, and comfortable picking up ad-hoc requests and turning them around. Strong Power BI and Fabric experience is required.
What You Will Own
Report development : Build clear, accurate operational and business reports on shared semantic models.
Measure development: Write and maintain DAX measures consistent with agreed definitions.
Validation: Reconcile report outputs to source/curated data before business review.
Fabric consumption: Consume governed Fabric tables and views with correct grain and refresh behavior.
Ad-hoc requests: Pick up and deliver ad-hoc data and reporting asks reliably and on time.
Key Responsibilities
Build and maintain Power BI reports and supporting model logic to the team standard.
Write DAX measures that match agreed metric definitions.
Validate report numbers against Fabric and source data, not only visual inspection.
Pick up ad-hoc and exploratory requests and deliver them quickly and accurately.
Document measures, assumptions, and refresh/support steps.
Support refresh, UAT, and business questions with evidence.
Escalate definition or data-quality gaps rather than hiding them in report logic.
Required Experience
Three or more years in Power BI report and model development.
Solid DAX and data modelling, including grain and filter context.
Practical Microsoft Fabric experience (Lakehouse/Warehouse, OneLake, refresh).
Working SQL — able to validate report numbers against source tables.
Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable taking clear direction.
Comfortable handling ad-hoc requests under changing priorities.
Preferred Experience
Power BI Service refresh, workspaces, and basic row-level security.
Power Query / Dataflows and an understanding of when logic belongs upstream.
Operational or time-series reporting, such as interval-based capacity or demand data.
Exposure to deployment pipelines or version-controlled BI assets.
Shared Expectations and Success Measures
The following expectations apply to both roles.
Power BI + Fabric Strong Power BI and practical Microsoft Fabric experience are required for both roles.
Trusted numbers: Reports reconcile to source; definitions are documented; freshness and limitations are visible.
Ad-hoc readiness: Both roles are comfortable picking up ad-hoc requests and delivering quickly without sacrificing accuracy.
Supportability: BI assets are documented and supportable by more than one person.
Communication: Discrepancies and limitations are explained clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Success Measures
Shared semantic models and documented measures are trusted across reports and teams.
Report numbers reconcile to Fabric and source data with repeatable evidence.
Ad-hoc requests are turned around quickly and accurately.
BI ownership is not dependent on any single individual.
Operational and leadership users understand data freshness, assumptions, and limitations.
