Our client is a leading bulk material export facility located on the North Vancouver waterfront, is seeking an individual to join our maintenance team. The Maintenance Superintendent (Mechanical) actively manages all mechanical components including planned maintenance, significant repairs, equipment breakdowns, and designated projects. The Superintendent acts in integrity to ensure all safety, environmental and maintenance standards are adhered to and maintenance goals are met, in order to continuously improve the terminal’s performance. The Superintendent demonstrates excellence in ensuring the completion of all maintenance activities and projects for our client, in coordination with the Electrical Superintendent, Operations and Projects/ Engineering teams.
This is a full-time position, reporting to the Maintenance Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Demonstrate mechanical excellence in managing and maintaining the flow of product through the conveyor systems (belts, rollers, frames, motors, drivers, etc.) and major equipment (railcar dumpers, stacker reclaim, portal reclaim and shiploaders).
•    Prioritize, assign, review and report on the performance of maintenance employees, maintenance systems, contractors and operations on site.
•    Sustain equipment to operate 95% of the time and be reliable 95% of the time.
•    Look for continuous improvement opportunities to safe work processes and mechanical systems.
•    Execution and continuous improvement of planned maintenance, using JDE and audits, to sustain operations.
•    Ensure maintenance employees are working in accordance with the two Collective Bargaining Agreements, for ILWU Locals 500 and 514.
•    Promote and maintain a culture of cooperation and excellence between maintenance, operations, safety, engineer- ing and purchasing employees.
•    Mandatory JOHSC participation and all required sub– committees.
•    Completion of investigations from first notification until close out, all investigations must be done thoroughly in coordination with the safety department and all involved parties.
•    The Mechanical Superintendent will be assigned other duties as required.

Skills and Abilities:
•    Demonstrated ability to lead, grow and develop an effective team.
•    Strong planning and organization skills, coupled with ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities.
•    Superior communication skills (written and verbal).
•    Superior skills with mechanical systems, coupled with a thorough knowledge of PLC’s.
•    Strong leadership skills in a unionized environment, coupled with the ability to promote a team culture.
•    Ability to complete risk assessments of new technology and determine feasibility and benefit of implementation.
•    Demonstrated incident investigation skills using the ability to conduct root cause analysis, to improve terminal operations.
•    Proficient with JDE, MS Office Suite, including Outlook.

Education and Experience:

  • University or Technical School graduate with a mechanical systems major.
  • Red Seal Trade Designation preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ supervision experience in an unionized environment, supervising several trade disciplines.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in material bulk loading/unloading in a waterfront, mining, heavy industry or similar operation.
