Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Geotechnical Specialist

We are currently seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Geotechnical Specialist to join our team in Saskatchewan. Ideally someone who has proven capability as a doer-seller with strong interpersonal and client communication skills and technical expertise. The successful applicant will have the right flare and ability to support our mining and industrial geotechnics team in building on the existing portfolio in Saskatchewan, as well as opportunities to support projects across a broad spectrum of sectors within Canada and worldwide. Background with Potash Mine design and operations, with knowledge of tailings management and the current Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), would be an asset.

 

Your role within the team:

  • Act as a key technical resource or lead for ongoing mining projects across Saskatchewan including work with Tailings Management Area planning and design.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams related to the management, planning and design of mine tailings from concept through to construction.
  • Technical tasks may also include tailings dam inspections, dam safety reviews, and other studies related to the design and behaviour of tailings facilities
  • Undertake geotechnical assessments, complex analysis, design calculations and detailed designs with knowledge of specialized software for slope stability, flow and stress-strain analysis such as GeoStudio, Rock science and PLAXIS.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging opportunities, trends, regulatory requirements and best practices e.g. ICMM, GISTM, etc.
  • Provide practical and economic solutions to clients that differentiate the team.
  • Contribute to the development of project proposals/cost estimates and participate in the process of securing new business opportunities or expanding the scope of existing projects.
  • Understand construction drawings and design reports to support construction and provide guidance and troubleshooting for QA field testing and performance of materials such as soil and concrete.
  • Analyze and prepare recommendations and reports relating to areas such as foundation design, infrastructure, shoring, retaining walls, slope stability, ground improvement, settlement and deformation analysis, seismic & liquefaction assessments, road structure design, dikes and dams, materials testing, and other geotechnical related projects.
  • Understanding of complex analytical results and application for design and/or research. A strong understanding of undrained shear strength, soil loading, and liquefaction related to coarse and fine tailings review would be an asset.
  • Identify/anticipate/evaluate market trends, opportunities, and industry dynamics.

The ideal candidate:

  • Degree in civil engineering or geology with a post graduate qualification in a geotechnical subject and have a minimum of 15 years pertinent experience.
  • Demonstrated local market knowledge and an established presence and reputation within the local geotechnical consulting and client network.
  • Highly developed client management skills.
  • Extensive experience in one or more of the following sectors: highways, rail, municipal, industrial, mining, commercial or residential geotechnics.
  • Experience acting as a senior technical expert for a site or design.
  • A strong academic background with a relevant degree (ideally MSc or equivalent).
  • Professional Engineering License in Saskatchewan.
  • Proven experience of acting in a senior role in a fast-moving engineering consultancy environment.
  • Project management – experience and understanding of the needs and approaches to the engineering consultancy and design markets, including relationships with clients, and work planning.
  • Proven geotechnical design experience.
  • Application of Design Standards and Guidelines in a design and ground investigation environment.
  • Experienced in general geotechnical numerical software.
  • Excellent interpersonal and technical skills and the ability to support the development of teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence to liaise with clients.
  • Excellent report writing skills with the ability to peer-review and produce quality deliverables.
  • A willingness to travel on short assignments both within Saskatchewan and nationwide.
  • A valid driving license.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$90,000 and CA$140,000
