Civil Structural Lead Engineer

General Purpose:

The successful individual will be responsible for producing general arrangements, layout and detail drawings, while adhering engineering criteria, design standards and applicable codes. The successful candidate will participate in the design of facilities and heavy civil structures, and be responsible for preparing designs, cost estimates, specifications, and contract documents; as well as, participating in scheduling, budgeting, tendering, contract administration, business development, and preparation of proposals.
 Key duties include, but are not limited to;
  • Prepare loading and load combinations based on the applicable codes and standards
  • Complete design calculation of complex structural engineering including steel structure design, concrete structure design, steel buildings, piling and foundation design and related element design
  • Review design drawings for compliance with designers
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis approach to solving engineering tasks
  • Prepare or assist in preparation of the cost estimates for the Civil/Structural bids and proposal work
  • Review structural engineers’ calculations and correct as required
  • Review shop drawings for structural adequacy to make sure they are completed according to structural drawings issued for construction
  • Assist in organizing and maintain departmental design guidelines
  • Lead, guide supervise and train structural design team on project 
  • Perform conceptual, FEED and detail design of structures and platforms. 
  • Prepare structural design basis, structural design specification and installation work procedures and cost estimations. 
  • Prepare technical proposals and check structural designs/drawings. 
  • Interface with clients and coordinate with other disciplines. 
  • Perform global structural analysis and detail design of structures and platforms. 
  • Prepare weight control report and material take-off.

Education and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Licensed with APEGA, and eligible for licensing in other jurisdictions.
  • Experience in design, specifications, scheduling, cost estimating, tendering, construction, and inspections
  • Minimum of 15 years of civil and structural design experience on multi discipline projects within the energy or petrochemical market – this experience should cover conceptual, FEED and detail. 
  • 10+ years of experience in EPC oil and gas industry. Five of these years must be as a Lead or Area Lead Engineer within the contracting industry. 
  • Broad knowledge of structural design in energy industry and related projects. 
  • Technical input to project feasibility, concept selection, and construction options. 
    Sound knowledge of multi-discipline design methods and inter-discipline dependencies & information flows.
  • Knowledge and application of relevant design codes and standards
  • Appreciation of the 3D modeling and CAD systems.
  • Specialist software applicable to the discipline
  • Ability to prepare or review technical specifications, scopes of work and reports.
  • Good working knowledge of API RP2A and AISC codes. SACS and STAAD III software experience is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to work within a diverse team environment
