Our client is a Fiber and 5G broadband company for rural living. They have become one of the country’s largest facilities-based telecommunications providers for residential and business customers. The client is building a world-class Fiber optic and 5G wireless network to enable innovative broadband services for today and future generations.  We are seeking to hire a Sr Equipment Engineering Specialist to join teh Network Strategy team.  The role is WFM remote.  This is a twelve-month contract to start and has a strong chance to be extended for more term based on successful performance.  This is a dynamic team with aggressive network build plans.

Contract Scope: Fixed Wireless Access & Backhaul Equipment Engineering
Engagement Overview
The Senior Equipment Engineering Specialist (Independent Contractor) provides expert-level technical services focused on the engineering, validation, and lifecycle support of network equipment used in Fixed Wireless access and backhaul networks.
This role delivers hands-on engineering expertise, standards development, and cross-functional technical support to ensure network equipment is designed, validated, documented, and deployable in a consistent, scalable, and operationally sound manner.
The contractor operates with a high degree of autonomy and is accountable for defined engineering deliverables, working collaboratively with internal engineering, planning, operations, and vendor teams.

Scope of Services & Key Responsibilities
1. Equipment Engineering & Technical Standards

  • Provide senior-level engineering support for Fixed Wireless equipment, including radios, antennas, cabinets, racks, power systems, and associated hardware.
  • Develop, review, and refine equipment standards, reference designs, and approved hardware configurations.
  • Ensure consistency of equipment engineering practices across vendors, technologies, and deployment regions.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for equipment-related technical decisions.

2. Hardware Integration, Validation & Readiness

    • or support validation of new hardware introductions (NTIs), including: Space, power, cooling, grounding, and environmental requirements.

    • Feasibility and operational constraints

    • lab-based testing and validation to confirm performance, scalability, and operational readiness.

    • technical risks associated with equipment integration and recommend mitigation strategies prior to field deployment.

3. Vendor Licensing & Feature Enablement Support
Provide technical expertise related to vendor licensing models, including feature-based, capacity-based, and pooled licenses.
Validate licensing requirements for new deployments, upgrades, and feature enablement.
Support engineering audits, reconciliations, and cleanup of inactive or misallocated licenses.

Note: Commercial negotiations, budgeting, and vendor contract management remain with internal leadership.

4. Engineering Documentation & Technical Artifacts
Produce and maintain engineering documentation such as: Equipment integration guides Installation and deployment references Configuration, validation, and readiness documentation.  Ensure documentation aligns with engineering governance and field deployment requirements.

5. Lab & Test Environment Support
Support lab environments used for equipment testing, validation, troubleshooting, and licensing verification. Ensure lab configurations reflect production standards and approved designs. Assist with reproducing field issues in the lab and validating corrective actions.

6. Cross-Functional Technical Collaboration
Collaborate with Planning, RAN Engineering, Microwave Engineering, Infrastructure, Operations, and Vendor teams. Provide technical support during: Network turn-ups Major upgrades. Troubleshooting and root-cause activities Serve as a senior technical escalation point for complex equipment-related issues within the defined engagement scope.

7. Operational Readiness & Quality Focus
Design and validate equipment solutions with 24×7 operational readiness in mind. Contribute to incident investigations and root-cause analysis related to equipment or feature behavior. Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, simplification, and deployment efficiency.

Required Qualifications & Expertise
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience. 7+ years of experience in wireless equipment engineering, network hardware integration, or infrastructure engineering. Demonstrated experience supporting Fixed Wireless or large-scale access networks.

Technical Expertise Deep understanding of Fixed Wireless access and backhaul equipment and deployment practices. Experience with hardware validation, lab testing, and field readiness processes. Strong knowledge of vendor licensing models and feature dependencies. Ability to interpret technical specifications, engineering drawings, and integration requirements.

Clear, concise written and verbal communication. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical teams. Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to engineering quality and standards.

  • Operates as an independent contractor, not an employee.
  • Manages own time and execution to meet agreed deliverables and milestones.
  • Provides specialized expertise and recommendations; implementation authority remains with the organization.
  • Adheres to confidentiality, security, and safety requirements applicable to network engineering environments.

 

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$55.00 and CA$70.00
