Our client is a Canadian multinational energy transportation company. They focus on transportation, distribution, and generation of energy, primarily in North America. They have a long history in the responsible development and reliable and safe operation of North American energy infrastructure. They are one of the continent’s largest providers of gas storage and related services.

They are currently looking for a Senior Pipeline Engineer for their Calgary or Edmonton, AB location.

Sr Pipeline Engineer

To oversee the design for pipelines and related facilities for expansion and maintenance capital projects executed by third party engineering firms to ensure compliance with Company standards and specifications and industry standards and managed to the project budget and schedule. Liaison with other functional groups within Projects, Operations and Shared Services to ensure project and company requirements are achieved and incorporated into the design deliverables.

Specific Accountabilities:
• Ensures that all pipelines and associated facilities are designed in accordance with all regulations, applicable industry codes and corporate specifications and standards
• Defines the scope, schedule and budget for the design and materials for pipeline projects
• Manages the execution of the design deliverables by a third party engineering firm against the project budget and schedule
• Reviews and approves design deliverables; drawings, technical reports and material listing sheets
• Reviews vendor materials quotations, prepares technical evaluations, and recommends to the supervisor selections based on technical merit along with price and delivery. For example, pipe, valves and fittings.
• Reviews and approves fabrication and assembly approval drawings for engineered equipment, and other fabrications (prefabricated buildings, piping fabrications, pig trap barrels, etc.)
• Reviews lessons learned from past projects and incorporated recommendations into future designs
• Provide technical guidance to junior engineers within the team.
• Support department initiatives as required.
• Bring about timely and effective resolution to issues through escalation to Supervisor and engagement of stakeholders through meetings, decision records, and other communication methods.

Scope/Dimensions:
Makes responsible decisions not usually subject to technical review, except for instances involving large financial commitments.

Contacts (Working Relationships):
• Engineering Consultant: Primary owner of engineering contracts. All engineering consultant engagements are routed through this position.
• Project Manager: Dotted line reporting relationship back to PM on all projects.
• Construction Manager: Coordination for construction input during design phase, coordination in the planning of field activities such as land surveys and geotechnical investigations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Required:
• Engineering degree
• Minimum of 7 years of experience
• Horizontal Directional Drill Design (HDD), road bores, and applicable load/stress calculations experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Capable of working independently, managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks accordingly
• Problem solving skills through use of standards, modification of standards and/or previous experience
• Effectively communicate technical issues and impacts to other technical and non-technical staff

Preferred:
• 7 – 10 years of natural gas and liquid pipeline design experience for onshore transmission lines in Canada and the US
• Familiarity and knowledge of materials standards & specifications (CSA Z662, CSA Z245.1, CSA, Z245.11 & Z245.12, 49 CFR Part 192 & 195, US Army Cops)
• Pressure test plan development and review/acceptance of test results
• Experience working with geotechnical and hydrotechnical hazards projects
• Professional designations relevant to project management or industry (CAPM, PMP, MBA, CWI, NACE, etc.) is a plus
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada

Working Conditions:
• Approximately 80-90% of work is office based working with multiple project teams
• Approximately 10-20% of time is in the field scoping projects or supporting construction and commissioning activities
• Time sensitive deliverables
• Work requires strong computer skills typically using Microsoft Office applications

Travel Requirements: Traveling will be required to sites – could be once a month for a few days within US or Canada depending on where the site is.
 

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$80.00 and CA$90.00
