Position: QA Functional Tester (Database Focus)

Location: Toronto (hybrid 3-4 days onsite)

Duration: expected 6 Months 

Job Description:

We are seeking a QA Functional Tester with strong database skills to join our team. This role is responsible for validating application functionality end-to-end, with a focus on ensuring data accuracy and integrity in underlying databases. The ideal candidate will have hands-on testing experience, the ability to write and run SQL queries independently, and a proactive attitude toward solving problems and collaborating with stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and execute functional test cases based on business and technical requirements.

  • Perform database validation by writing and executing complex SQL queries against Oracle/PostgreSQL (or similar RDBMS).

  • Verify data accuracy, integrity, and business rule compliance in back-end systems.

  • Collaborate with developers, BAs, and business stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve issues.

  • Execute test cycles including regression, integration, and UAT support.

  • Log, track, and manage defects to closure using established QA processes and tools.

  • Contribute to test documentation, including test plans, cases, and status reports.

  • Ensure adherence to QA best practices, standards, and procedures.

Deliverables

  • Comprehensive functional test cases and scripts covering assigned features.

  • Test execution results with clear documentation of defects and resolutions.

  • Accurate SQL-based validation of application data.

  • Status reports highlighting progress, risks, and issues.

  • Contribution to continuous improvement of QA processes.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in functional testing/QA roles.

  • Strong SQL skills (able to write queries with joins, aggregations, subqueries).

  • Hands-on experience with relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, etc.).

  • Experience testing across UI, API, and database layers.

  • Familiarity with defect tracking and collaboration tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence).

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a proactive and positive attitude.

  • Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Exposure to automation frameworks (Java, Selenium, or similar).

  • Experience in financial services, insurance, or other data-driven industries.

  • Understanding of CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Git, etc.).

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$65.00 and CA$75.00
