Senior Structures Engineer

Halifax, NS (Onsite)

Fulltime

Join the Engineering group of a major Canadian shipbuilding program, contributing to the design, construction, testing/commissioning, and delivery of complex naval and coast guard vessels. This is a rare opportunity to apply deep structural expertise to one of the most technically demanding, long-horizon shipbuilding efforts in the country.

Reporting to the Team Lead, the Senior Structures Engineer works independently to provide technical oversight across all project stages, reviewing structural designs and engineering products, ensuring compliance with customer and classification-society requirements, and developing practical solutions to challenges encountered during construction. The role blends office-based engineering with hands-on problem-solving in an active industrial shipyard.

Responsibilities

  • Manage planned and emergent engineering work within assigned scope
  • Support internal and external stakeholders with structural/technical expertise
  • Review technical reports, calculations, models, and specifications produced by subcontractors and design partners
  • Develop engineering deliverables and author/maintain processes for recurring discipline tasks
  • Identify discipline-specific technical risks and develop mitigation strategies; apply risk-based decision-making
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices and outputs

Qualifications

  • B.Eng. or equivalent; P.Eng. designation (or eligible); Naval Architecture degree an asset
  • Minimum 8 years in ship design/construction (naval or modern commercial ship structures)
  • Working knowledge of shipyard structural disciplines — hull structure, arrangements, producibility, manufacturing
  • Familiarity with relevant class/regulatory standards (e.g., Lloyd's Register, Transport Canada, IMO, IACS)
  • Ability to work to strict production schedules and deadlines
  • Must be eligible for Canadian Government security clearance, the Controlled Goods Program, and ITAR

Work model: Full-time, five days on-site. Production-focused environment with regular shipyard site visits.
