Job Title: Commissioning and Start up Interface Operator
Location: Elk Valley, BC (Onsite)
Estimated Duration: 14 Months

The Commissioning and Start Up Interface Operator plays a critical role in supporting the successful delivery of major capital water projects through the construction, commissioning, and start-up phases. This role acts as a key liaison between the project execution teams, commissioning teams, and the client’s Operations Readiness group, ensuring seamless integration and alignment across all project stages.
The Commissioning and Start Up Interface Operator is accountable for supporting the completions and turnover process, facilitating commissioning and start-up activities, and proactively identifying and mitigating risks associated with these work scopes. This position ensures that all activities are executed in compliance with the client’s Project Framework and in accordance with the project’s construction execution strategy and management plan.
 
Key Responsibilities
Position Overview

Commissioning & Start-Up Support
  • Facilitate and support commissioning and start-up activities, ensuring adherence to project schedules, safety standards, and operational requirements.
  • Work closely with the client’s Operations Readiness team to align commissioning strategies with long-term operational goals.
Interface Management
  • Serve as the primary interface between construction, commissioning, and operations teams, ensuring smooth transitions through each project phase.
  • Coordinate between internal stakeholders and contractors to resolve issues, remove bottlenecks, and ensure timely handovers.
Completions & Turnover
  • Support the development and execution of system completion plans including pre-commissioning, commissioning, and turnover documentation.
  • Monitor progress of construction and commissioning scope to ensure readiness for system turnover.
Risk Management
  • Identify and assess risks related to commissioning and start-up activities and contribute to the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Participate in risk reviews, HAZOPs, and constructability assessments to support safe and efficient project execution.
Safety & Environmental Stewardship
  • Promote a strong culture of safety and sustainability throughout the construction and commissioning phases.
  • Actively participate in field safety walks, audits, and toolbox talks to ensure hazard identification and mitigation.
Oversight of Contractor Activities
  • Provide oversight of contractor execution in line with project scope, quality standards, and timelines.
  • Ensure contractors adhere to commissioning protocols and integrate with client-side activities effectively.  
Required Qualifications & Experience  
Key Competencies
  • Relevant technical diploma or trade certification; engineering degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in commissioning, start-up, or operations support within large capital projects, preferably in the water, oil & gas, energy, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Proven ability to manage interfaces between construction, commissioning, and operations teams.
  • Strong knowledge of commissioning processes, turnover systems, and project completion methodologies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project frameworks and stage-gate project execution models.
  • Experience working in a safety-critical environment with a strong focus on hazard identification and risk mitigation.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to dynamic project environments
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Proactive approach to risk management and decision-making
  • Commitment to health, safety, and environmental performance

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$75.00 and CA$110.00
