What you’ll do:
The Manager, Legal Counsel is responsible for contributing to the profitable growth of Canadian Tire Corporation by providing legal support, guidance and advice in compliance with provincial and federal laws and regulations to enable the growth and delivery of Canadian Tire Bank’s (CTB) business objectives.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide proactive, timely and strategic advice to business units for the execution of a diverse set of matters. These include:
- Draft, review and negotiate a range of commercial contracts, including vendor, service, confidentiality and inter-company agreements, under supervision as appropriate;
- Collaborating with internal parties on the investigation and handling of litigation matters, including retaining and instructing external counsel;
- Reviewing and providing advice in relation to production orders, subpoenas and summonses;
- Answering questions and advising on wills and estates matters, bankruptcy, debt collection, information requests, records retention and customer complaints;
- Participating in and advising on corporate projects and new product launches relating to banking (credit card, deposit products, insurance);
- Maintaining awareness of emerging legal and regulatory risks relevant to the Bank.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams across CTB and the enterprise
- Provide legal support and advice to business, risk and control functions on day-to-day legal matters affecting the Bank
- Work collaboratively with the Compliance team to interpret legislation, regulations, and regulatory guidance, and assess applicability and impact to the Bank’s operations
- Identify and ensure compliance of business programs and business objectives while minimizing and mitigating legal risk to the company
- Proactively interpret legislation and identify impacts on CTB’s customer-facing businesses and share with impacted stakeholders to ensure awareness, understanding and application
- Remain up to date on various laws in order to translate legal requirements of various laws into business impacts and provide alternatives and recommendations to meet business objectives
- Provide support to AVP, Legal Counsel, AVP Senior Legal Counsel and General Counsel where necessary
What you bring:
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from an accredited Canadian law school.
- Member of the Law Society of Ontario, in good standing
- 2+ years relevant work experience, preferably at a law firm or large in-house legal department
- Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations governing financial services or a similar highly regulated entity would be an asset
- Understanding of the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions’ Guideline B-10 – Outsourcing of Business Activities, Functions and Processes is an asset
- Experience working on a wide array of contracts. Experience with IT contracts would be an asset, but is not required
- Ability to collaborate and influence a variety of individuals (e.g. business colleagues, senior leaders, etc.)
- Proven ability to adapt to a variable workload with the skills to prioritize and manage multiple files with tight deadlines
- Ability to identify potential legal issues and present potential solutions
- Excellent communication skills – written and oral
- Excellent organizational and analytical abilities with attention to accuracy and detail

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$100,000 and CA$120,000
