The Opportunity:
Manager – Payroll Analytics
The Manager, Payroll Analytics, is accountable for end-to-end payroll governance, forecasting accuracy, and labour performance insights across the SportChek, PHL, and Mark’s Banners. This role ensures payroll is accurate, compliant, forecast-aligned, and decision-useful, while enabling leaders to actively manage labour as a strategic driver of sales, productivity, and margin.

Payroll Performance Management & Governance

  • Own weekly payroll performance tracking versus forecast, budget, and prior year (Payroll %, Payroll $, Sales per Hour, Cost per Hour).
  • Ensure payroll actuals are accurately captured, reconciled, and aligned across reporting tools and SharePoint / Power BI outputs.
  • Act as the single point of accountability for payroll variance explanations and financial narratives.

Labour Forecasting & Planning

  • Partner with FP&A and Store Operations to develop and maintain weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll forecasts.
  • Translate sales outlooks into labour demand using labour models and scheduling assumptions.
  • Support preliminary and final payroll plans during budget and reforecast cycles.

Weekly Reporting & Business Insights

  • Lead weekly payroll reporting including WBM summaries and XTD/YTD views.
  • Explain payroll performance drivers, separating sales leverage from true labour efficiency.
  • Identify emerging risks and opportunities early and recommend corrective actions.

Labour Model & Scheduling Enablement

  • Own and continuously improve labour models translating sales plans into planned hours by role and task.
  • Ensure scheduling tools and assumptions are operationally realistic and consistently applied.
  • Support Field AVPs and Store Leaders in interpreting labour insights.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as the primary payroll liaison between Finance, Store Operations, HR, and Data teams.
  • Lead recurring payroll discussions and ensure insights are clearly communicated to leadership.

Process Improvement & Capability Building

  • Identify opportunities to simplify payroll reporting and automate manual processes.
  • Support transitions in payroll systems, data pipelines, and reporting standards.
  • Contribute to playbooks, training materials, and best-practice payroll governance.

Core Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong understanding of retail payroll, labour economics, and store operations
  • Advanced financial and analytical skills with strong business judgment
  • Ability to translate data into clear, actionable insights
  • Strong stakeholder management and influence without authority

Experience & Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in Finance, Payroll, Labour Analytics, or Retail Operations Finance
  • Experience supporting multi-store retail environments
  • Exposure to payroll systems, labour scheduling, and financial planning processes

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$79,000 and CA$115,000
