Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Pickering, ON

Estimated Duration: 12 Months

Position Summary

The Senior Engineer will perform complex engineering assignments supporting the design, analysis, modification, evaluation and lifecycle management of nuclear systems and equipment.

Working with a high degree of independence, this individual will apply advanced engineering judgment to resolve technical challenges, review engineering deliverables, support manufacturing and constructability activities, and develop practical solutions that meet project, customer, regulatory and quality requirements.

The position will also provide technical guidance and peer review to other engineering team members and support the resolution of technical issues throughout project execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex engineering assignments involving design, development, analysis, evaluation, testing and technical problem solving.
  • Prepare and/or critically review engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications and other engineering deliverables.
  • Perform system engineering activities and participate in formal design review processes.
  • Independently evaluate and apply appropriate engineering techniques, procedures, codes and criteria.
  • Develop new or adapted engineering methods, systems, models and technical solutions.
  • Support the lifecycle management, modification and replacement of existing systems, equipment and technologies.
  • Perform or review thermal, hydraulic, thermohydraulic, piping/stress and mechanical analyses, as applicable.
  • Support finite element analysis (FEA) and other engineering evaluations.
  • Review designs for manufacturability and constructability.
  • Participate in constructability and multidisciplinary design review meetings.
  • Support field engineering activities and resolution of field-related technical issues.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues identified by project management, engineering leadership or customers.
  • Research industry best practices and recommend technical or process improvements.
  • Provide advanced technical support to project teams and customers.
  • Guide and review the work of other engineers and technical team members.
  • Monitor engineering progress and provide updates to management as required.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable customer, organizational, regulatory, safety and quality requirements.
  • Support special projects and other engineering activities as required.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering and engineering design review processes.
  • Experience preparing and/or providing critical peer review of engineering calculations, technical reports and design documentation.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and equipment within complex or highly regulated environments.
  • Experience with manufacturing methods and constructability reviews.
  • Ability to independently evaluate technical problems and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Experience working collaboratively with engineers from multiple technical disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of engineering quality, configuration and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to execute engineering work to stringent safety and quality standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with both technical teams and clients.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple engineering activities at different stages of execution.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing project requirements and priorities.

Codes & Standards Experience

Working knowledge of several of the following is strongly preferred:

  • CSA N285.0 – General requirements for pressure-retaining systems and components in CANDU nuclear power plants
  • CSA B51 – Boiler, pressure vessel and pressure piping requirements
  • CSA N299 / Z299 – Nuclear quality assurance requirements
  • ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC)
  • ASME Section III – Class 1, 2 and 3
  • ASME B31.1 – Power Piping
  • ASME B31.3 – Process Piping
  • CSA S16 – Design of Steel Structures
  • CSA N289 – Seismic design and qualification of nuclear power plants
  • National Building Code of Canada
  • ASME B30.20 – Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices

Engineering Analysis Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas is considered highly valuable:

  • Thermohydraulic analysis
  • Hydraulic analysis
  • Thermal analysis
  • Mechanical equipment analysis
  • Piping and pipe stress analysis
  • Pressure boundary analysis
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Structural/mechanical analysis
  • Equipment qualification and evaluation

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$70.00 and CA$110.00
