Our client develops modern financial infrastructure used by businesses to manage and process complex payment workflows within their applications and platforms. Role Overview
The Senior Backend Engineer (Reliability & Performance) plays a key role in ensuring the availability, scalability, and security of production systems.
This is a hands-on engineering position that blends backend software development with operational system reliability. You will spend a significant portion of your time writing production-level code and implementing architectural improvements that enhance platform stability, performance, and security.
You will also contribute to improving monitoring and alerting capabilities, supporting cloud infrastructure initiatives, and strengthening the overall operational maturity of the platform.
The role involves close collaboration with engineering, product, security, and support teams to investigate and resolve complex technical challenges in high-demand environments.

Critical Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

4+ years of experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Backend Software Engineering, or Platform Engineering roles

Strong programming ability in at least one server-side language such as Python, Java, Go, or PHP

Proven experience with system scalability, performance optimization, and architecture design

Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)

Experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as Datadog or similar tools

Excellent analytical and troubleshooting abilities

Strong understanding of security best practices for modern cloud environments
Minimum relevant experience required: 4 years
Additional Desirable Qualifications

Experience optimizing high-volume transactional systems for performance and reliability

Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar

Experience working with serverless environments and event-driven architectures

Knowledge of CI/CD pipeline configuration and deployment automation

Experience supporting cloud access control and security best practices, including permissions management and network security policies

Familiarity with compliance standards commonly used in regulated environments such as SOC 2 or PCI DSS
Key Responsibilities
Platform Scalability & Development

Collaborate with engineering leadership to design and implement improvements that support long-term platform growth

Develop high-quality backend code that enhances system reliability and operational efficiency

Lead initiatives focused on improving platform scalability, performance, and stability

Proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks before they impact users

Conduct load and stress testing to validate system capacity and resilience

Deliver enhancements, bug fixes, and reliability improvements directly within the platform codebase
Monitoring & Observability

Maintain and enhance monitoring, alerting, and logging capabilities to ensure early detection of anomalies

Define and track operational metrics including key performance indicators and reliability objectives
Incident Response & Advanced Support

Partner with support teams to investigate and resolve complex production issues

Work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and security teams to diagnose root causes of incidents

Lead post-incident analysis and implement improvements to prevent recurrence
Infrastructure Management

Contribute to the design and evolution of cloud-based infrastructure

Promote automation and modern infrastructure management practices

Support capacity planning initiatives to ensure scalable and cost-efficient infrastructure
Security

Assist with implementing and maintaining platform security controls, including access management and data protection practices

Work with security teams to support incident response processes and remediation activities

Promote secure engineering practices across development and infrastructure environments

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$100,000 and CA$130,000
